“Put 4 drops in your ear and you will hear like new again!

That claim — “Put 4 drops in your ear and you will hear like new again” — is misleading without knowing what the drops are and why hearing is reduced.

When ear drops can actually help

If hearing is reduced because earwax is blocking the ear canal, certain earwax-softening drops can loosen the wax. Removing the blockage can restore hearing in some people.

However, ear drops cannot reverse age-related hearing loss or damage to the inner-ear hair cells. Those are common causes of hearing loss and generally require a hearing evaluation rather than a home remedy.

Don’t put just anything in your ear

Avoid homemade mixtures, essential oils, garlic oil, or other unproven substances. They aren’t established treatments for hearing loss and may irritate or injure the ear.

You also shouldn’t use earwax drops if you have ear pain, drainage, dizziness, an injured/perforated eardrum, or recent ear surgery unless a healthcare professional tells you to.

Bottom line: Four drops might help if the problem is removable earwax and the product is an appropriate earwax-softening medicine. They won’t make every type of hearing loss “like new.”
