These Visible Signs May Be Hiding Liver Disease

The liver is essential for filtering waste, producing proteins, and processing nutrients. Early liver disease often causes few or no symptoms, and many visible signs can have causes unrelated to the liver. However, some physical changes may warrant medical evaluation.

1. Yellowing of the Skin or Eyes (Jaundice)

Jaundice occurs when bilirubin builds up in the body. It can be caused by:

  • Liver disease
  • Blocked bile ducts
  • Certain blood disorders

Jaundice should always be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

2. Itchy Skin

Persistent, widespread itching—especially without a rash—can occur in some liver and bile duct diseases, although allergies, eczema, and kidney disease are much more common causes.

3. Swelling of the Abdomen or Legs

Advanced liver disease can lead to:

  • Ascites: Fluid buildup in the abdomen
  • Edema: Swelling in the legs and ankles

These symptoms can also result from heart, kidney, or vein problems.

4. Easy Bruising or Bleeding

The liver produces proteins involved in blood clotting. When liver function is impaired, bruising or bleeding may become more common. Blood-thinning medications and other conditions can also cause these symptoms.

5. Spider-Like Blood Vessels

Small, spider-shaped blood vessels on the skin (called spider angiomas) can be associated with chronic liver disease. They may also appear in healthy people, especially during pregnancy or due to aging.

6. Dark Urine and Pale Stools

These changes can occur when bile flow is reduced and may be a sign of liver or bile duct disease, particularly if they occur with jaundice.

7. Red Palms

Some people with chronic liver disease develop redness on the palms (palmar erythema). This finding is not specific and can occur in healthy individuals and other medical conditions.

Other Symptoms That May Occur

In addition to visible signs, liver disease may cause:

  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Pain or discomfort in the upper right abdomen
