The claim “THIS burns weeds in 1 day! They NEVER grow again” is a common gardening headline, but it is usually exaggerated. Many homemade weed killers can make weeds look dead quickly, but permanent removal is rare because roots and new seeds can allow weeds to return.
A common homemade weed treatment
A frequently shared method uses:
- White vinegar (stronger horticultural vinegar works faster than regular kitchen vinegar)
- A small amount of dish soap to help the liquid stick to leaves
This can:
✅ Dry out and brown the leaves
✅ Work quickly on young, small weeds
❌ Often does not kill deep roots
❌ Can damage grass and desirable plants if it touches them
For longer-lasting weed control
1. Remove the roots
- Pull weeds after rain when the soil is softer.
- Use a weeding tool for deep-rooted plants.
2. Block sunlight
- Add mulch (wood chips, straw, compost, or other suitable ground cover).
- Keep soil covered to reduce new weed growth.

Do not mix household chemicals together (especially bleach and vinegar), as they can create harmful fumes.
