“This Burns Weeds in 1 Day! They Never Grow Again!” – Fact or Fiction?
Claims that a single homemade spray will kill weeds in one day and prevent them from ever growing back are usually exaggerated.
Most DIY weed killers may burn the leaves of young weeds, but they often don’t kill the roots, especially for perennial weeds. As a result, many weeds grow back.
Common Homemade Weed Killers
White Vinegar
Household vinegar (about 5% acetic acid) can damage the leaves of small, young weeds on a sunny day.
Limitations:
- Usually does not kill established roots.
- Can harm nearby plants.
- May require repeated applications.
Boiling Water
Pouring boiling water directly onto weeds can kill small weeds growing in cracks in sidewalks or driveways.
Avoid using it near desirable plants, as it can damage their roots too.
Hand Pulling
For many garden weeds, pulling them by hand—especially after rain when the soil is soft—is one of the most effective ways to remove the entire root.
How to Keep Weeds From Coming Back
- Pull weeds before they produce seeds.
- Apply a layer of mulch (2–4 inches) around garden plants to block sunlight from reaching weed seeds.
