Claims that a homemade mixture will burn weeds in one day and prevent them from ever returning are usually misleading. A substance can kill the visible leaves quickly without killing the roots, meaning the weed may grow back.
What works—and what doesn’t
Boiling water can kill small weeds by damaging their leaves and tissues, but it generally doesn’t provide lasting root control.
Household vinegar can burn foliage, particularly on young weeds, but ordinary vinegar isn’t a dependable way to kill established perennial roots.
Salt can kill vegetation, but it’s a poor choice for garden beds because it can accumulate in soil and damage desirable plants and soil health.
Hand-pulling or digging can be effective when you remove the roots, particularly after rain or watering has softened the soil.
Mulch can suppress new weeds by blocking light and is often one of the safest long-term approaches around established plants.
