This Is Why We Get Cramps at Night

Nighttime leg cramps are sudden, involuntary muscle contractions, most often affecting the calf, foot, or thigh. They are common and usually harmless, but they can be extremely painful.

Why do they happen?

There isn’t always one identifiable cause. Possible contributors include:

  • Age-related changes — night cramps become more common as we get older.
  • Muscle fatigue or overuse, particularly after exercise.
  • Dehydration or changes in the body’s fluid and salt balance.
  • Certain medications, including some diuretics and statins.
  • Nerve problems, including diabetic neuropathy.
  • Circulation problems or certain kidney and liver conditions.

Importantly, night cramps aren’t automatically caused by a magnesium deficiency. Taking magnesium supplements isn’t a universal solution unless a deficiency or another indication is present.

What to do when a cramp strikes

Try to gently stretch the affected muscle, massage it, or stand up and put weight on the affected leg. These measures can help the muscle relax.

How to reduce future cramps

Regular calf stretching—particularly before bedtime—may reduce the frequency of cramps. Staying adequately hydrated and reviewing medications with your healthcare professional can also be helpful.

When should you get checked?

Talk with a healthcare professional if cramps regularly disturb your sleep, last more than 10 minutes, or occur with leg swelling or numbness.
