If a mop is very dirty and smells bad, you can often refresh it with a simple cleaning routine instead of replacing it.
A common method:
- Rinse first
- Rinse the mop head with warm water to remove loose dirt.
- Soak it
- Fill a bucket with warm water and add:
- a small amount of liquid laundry detergent or dish soap, and
- optionally a little white vinegar to help reduce odors and mineral buildup.
- Fill a bucket with warm water and add:
- Let it sit
- Soak for about 15–30 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly
- Rinse until the water runs clear.
- Dry completely
- Hang the mop in a well-ventilated place. A damp mop can develop bacteria and unpleasant smells.
Avoid mixing vinegar with bleach—the combination can create dangerous fumes.
If the mop head is old, frayed, or still smells after cleaning, replacing the mop head may be more effective than trying to restore it.
