What Is The Normal Blood Pressure For Each Age

What Is Normal Blood Pressure at Each Age?

A common misconception is that normal blood pressure should be higher as you get older. For adults, current U.S. guidelines use the same definition of normal blood pressure across adult age groups: below 120/80 mmHg.

Age Normal blood pressure
18–39 Below 120/80 mmHg
40–59 Below 120/80 mmHg
60–79 Below 120/80 mmHg
80+ Below 120/80 mmHg, although treatment targets may be individualized
How to interpret the numbers
Normal: less than 120/80
Elevated: 120–129 and less than 80
Stage 1 hypertension: 130–139 or 80–89
Stage 2 hypertension: 140 or higher or 90 or higher

For adults who have hypertension, the 2025 AHA/ACC guideline generally recommends a treatment goal below 130/80, but doctors may individualize this for people who are frail, have limited life expectancy, or have other circumstances affecting treatment tolerance.

What about children?

Children are different. Their normal blood pressure is interpreted according to age, sex, and height, rather than using the adult 120/80 threshold.

One reading isn’t enough

Blood pressure naturally fluctuates. A diagnosis of hypertension should not normally be based on one isolated reading; repeated, properly measured readings provide a much better picture.

If you give me your age and your blood-pressure reading (for example, 68 years old, 145/85), I can explain exactly what it means.
