3 Exercises to Help Relieve Sciatica Leg Pain
Gentle movement can help many people with sciatica, and guidelines recommend staying as active as you reasonably can rather than spending long periods sitting or lying down. There isn’t one exercise that works for everyone, so the right movement depends partly on what aggravates or eases your symptoms.

1. Knee-to-chest stretch
Lie on your back with your knees bent.
Slowly bring one knee toward your chest.
Hold for about 5 seconds, then return it gently.
Repeat 5–10 times on each side.
Don’t force the stretch or hold your breath.
2. Gentle knee rotations
Lie on your back with both knees bent and feet supported.
Slowly allow your knees to move a little toward one side.
Return to the center and move toward the other side.
Do 5–10 gentle repetitions.
Keep the movement comfortable rather than trying to achieve a deep stretch.
3. Gentle back extension
Lie on your stomach.
Place your hands near your shoulders.
Slowly press your upper body upward while allowing your hips to remain on the bed or floor.
Only raise yourself as far as comfortable.
Return slowly and repeat 5–10 times.
This last exercise is particularly useful for some people whose sciatica is related to a disc problem, but it isn’t appropriate for everyone. NHS physiotherapy guidance similarly recommends stopping exercises that significantly worsen your symptoms.

A simple rule
Gentle discomfort may be acceptable; increasing or spreading leg pain is a reason to stop. Build up gradually rather than trying to stretch the nerve aggressively.

Seek urgent medical attention if sciatica is accompanied by new severe or worsening weakness/numbness in both legs, numbness around the genitals or anus, or difficulty controlling or passing urine or stool. These can indicate a serious spinal problem.

If your sciatica has persisted for several weeks, is getting worse, or is interfering substantially with normal activities, a clinician or physiotherapist can help determine which exercises are appropriate for you.
