How to wash yellowed pillows: 3 tips to keep them white and new

Yellowed pillows are usually caused by sweat, body oils, saliva, dust, and detergent buildup. You can often brighten them again with a good wash routine. Here are 3 tips to keep pillows white and fresh:

1. Pre-treat yellow stains before washing

  • Remove the pillowcase and protector.
  • Mix a solution of warm water + a small amount of laundry detergent + baking soda (about 2–3 tablespoons of baking soda per pillow).
  • Apply it to yellow areas and let it sit for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  • For stubborn stains, a small amount of oxygen bleach (color-safe bleach) can help lift discoloration.

2. Wash pillows properly

  • Check the care label first—many synthetic and down pillows can be machine washed, but some cannot.
  • Wash two pillows at a time to balance the machine.
  • Use warm water and a gentle cycle with a small amount of detergent.
  • Add an extra rinse cycle to remove soap residue, which can make pillows look dull.
  • Avoid using too much detergent; buildup can trap oils and cause yellowing.

3. Dry completely to prevent odors and yellowing

  • Dry pillows thoroughly—moisture left inside can lead to smells and mildew.
  • Use a dryer on a low or medium setting if the label allows.
  • Add dryer balls or clean tennis balls to help fluff pillows.
  • If possible, finish with a few hours of sun drying, as sunlight can naturally brighten fabrics.

To keep pillows white longer:

  • Use a washable pillow protector under your pillowcase.
  • Wash pillowcases weekly.
  • Wash pillows every few months (or according to the care label).

If the yellowing is deep and the pillow filling has become lumpy or smells musty, replacing the pillow may be more effective than repeated washing.
