I had no idea this was a thing

That hole in a pot or pan handle really does have practical purposes—and it isn’t just decorative.

🍳 What is the hole in a pot handle for?

1. Holding a cooking utensil
The most useful purpose is that you can rest a wooden spoon, spatula, or other long-handled utensil in the hole while cooking. The utensil stays supported by the handle, with the working end positioned over the pan instead of being placed directly on the countertop.

2. Hanging the cookware
On many pans and pots, the hole also allows you to hang the cookware from a hook for convenient storage.

Common misconceptions

❌ “The hole is only for hanging the pan.”
Not necessarily. On many designs, it can serve both storage and utensil-resting purposes.

❌ “Every pot handle hole has exactly the same purpose.”
No. Manufacturers use different handle designs, and some holes may primarily be intended for hanging or may have additional design or manufacturing functions.

❌ “You can put any utensil through it.”
Be careful with very hot utensils. The handle can become hot, and a poorly balanced utensil could fall or spill food.

A useful little trick

If your pan’s handle has a suitable opening, place the handle of your spoon or spatula through the hole while keeping the cooking end over the pan. This can reduce countertop mess—but it doesn’t replace a proper utensil rest, especially when the utensil is very hot or greasy.

So the “secret” isn’t really mysterious: the hole often doubles as a utensil holder and a hanging point. The exact function depends on the cookware’s design.
