If You Drink Lemon Water Every Morning, This Is What Happens to Your Body

Starting the day with lemon water is a healthy habit for many people—but some of the claims surrounding it are exaggerated. Lemon water isn’t a detox drink or a cure-all. Its main benefits come from hydration, with some additional nutrition from the lemon.

🍋 1. You hydrate after sleeping

The biggest benefit is simply drinking water. After several hours without fluids, having a glass in the morning helps restore hydration. Lemon can make plain water more appealing, which may help you drink more throughout the day.

🟡 2. You get a little vitamin C

Lemons provide vitamin C, an antioxidant that supports normal immune function and collagen production. However, the amount you get from a splash of lemon juice isn’t enough to replace a balanced diet or a vitamin-C-rich food.

🚽 3. It may support digestion

Adequate fluid intake helps keep stools softer and can help prevent constipation. Lemon water itself isn’t a proven “cleanse” for your digestive system, though.

🪨 4. It may help prevent certain kidney stones

This is one of the more interesting potential benefits. Citrus fruits contain citrate, which can reduce the formation of some calcium-based kidney stones. Lemon juice can increase urinary citrate, although people with recurrent kidney stones should discuss prevention with a healthcare professional.

⚖️ 5. It doesn’t magically burn fat

Lemon water does not directly melt body fat or dramatically speed up metabolism. If replacing a sugary drink with unsweetened lemon water reduces your calorie intake, it can indirectly help with weight management.

🦷 One downside: your teeth

Lemon juice is acidic. Frequent exposure can contribute to tooth-enamel erosion. To reduce exposure, don’t slowly sip lemon water for hours, consider drinking it with a straw, and rinse your mouth with plain water afterward. Don’t brush immediately after acidic drinks, because enamel can temporarily be more vulnerable
