Pharmacist Issues Warning to Anyone Who Takes Vitamin D

Vitamin D is an important nutrient that helps the body absorb calcium, maintain strong bones, support muscles, and play a role in immune function. However, like any supplement, too much vitamin D can be harmful. Pharmacists often remind people to use supplements appropriately and avoid taking high doses without medical advice.

1. More vitamin D is not always better

Vitamin D is fat-soluble, meaning the body can store excess amounts. Taking very large doses over time may cause vitamin D levels to become too high.

Excess vitamin D can increase calcium levels in the blood (hypercalcemia), which may lead to symptoms such as:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Constipation
  • Excessive thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Confusion

2. Be careful with high-dose supplements

Some people take very large doses believing they will provide extra protection or health benefits. High-dose vitamin D should generally be used only when recommended and monitored by a healthcare professional.

3. Certain people should ask a doctor first

Medical advice is especially important for people with:

  • Kidney disease
  • A history of kidney stones
  • High calcium levels
  • Certain thyroid or parathyroid conditions
  • Sarcoidosis or other conditions affecting calcium regulation
  • Medications that affect vitamin D or calcium levels

4. Check your total intake

Vitamin D can come from:

  • Supplements
  • Multivitamins
  • Fortified foods
  • Some nutritional products

Taking multiple products can accidentally increase your daily amount.

5. Vitamin D deficiency is also a concern

Avoiding supplements completely is not necessary for everyone. Some people are more likely to have low vitamin D, including those with:

  • Limited sun exposure
  • Older age
  • Certain absorption problems
  • Darker skin pigmentation
  • Certain medical conditions

A blood test can help determine whether supplementation is needed
