These 5 Symptoms May Be Early Clues of an Upcoming Heart Attack
A heart attack does not always begin with sudden, severe chest pain. Some people experience warning symptoms hours, days, or even weeks beforehand, while others have little or no warning. Recognizing possible signs early can help someone seek care sooner.
1. Chest discomfort or pressure
The most common warning sign is discomfort in the chest, which may feel like:
- Pressure, squeezing, fullness, or heaviness
- Burning or tightness
- Pain that comes and goes
It may occur during activity, stress, or even at rest.
2. Shortness of breath
Breathing difficulty can happen:
- With or without chest discomfort
- During normal activities that were previously easy
- Along with unusual tiredness
This may occur when the heart is struggling to pump effectively.
3. Unusual fatigue or weakness
Some people—especially older adults, women, and people with diabetes—may experience:
- Extreme tiredness
- Weakness
- Reduced ability to do normal activities
- A feeling that something is “not right”
This can appear before more obvious symptoms.
4. Pain or discomfort in other areas
Heart-related pain may spread beyond the chest, including:
- One or both arms
- Shoulder
- Neck
- Jaw
- Back
- Upper stomach area
This happens because the brain may interpret signals from the heart as pain in nearby areas.
5. Sweating, nausea, or dizziness
Possible warning symptoms include:
- Cold sweats
- Nausea or vomiting
- Lightheadedness
- Feeling faint
- Sudden anxiety or a sense of danger
These symptoms can be mistaken for other problems, but they should be taken seriously when they are new or unusual
