Pharmacist Issues Warning to Anyone Taking Vitamin D

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that helps the body absorb calcium and supports bone, muscle, and immune health. While many people benefit from adequate vitamin D, more is not always better. Taking high doses unnecessarily or without medical guidance can be harmful.

1. Don’t Exceed the Recommended Dose Unless Advised

For most adults, the recommended daily intake is 600–800 IU (15–20 micrograms), depending on age. Some people with a confirmed deficiency may need higher doses, but these should be taken under a healthcare provider’s supervision.

2. Too Much Vitamin D Can Be Harmful

Excess vitamin D can raise calcium levels in the blood (hypercalcemia), which may cause:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Excessive thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Weakness
  • Confusion
  • Kidney stones

Vitamin D toxicity is almost always caused by high-dose supplements, not by food or sun exposure.

3. Be Aware of Drug Interactions

Vitamin D supplements can interact with some medications, including:

  • Certain diuretics
  • Some seizure medications
  • Corticosteroids
  • Orlistat (a weight-loss medication)

Tell your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you take.

4. More Isn’t Necessarily Better

If your vitamin D level is already adequate, taking extra vitamin D has not been shown to provide additional health benefits for most people.

5. Some People May Need Testing

A healthcare provider may recommend checking your vitamin D level if you:

  • Have osteoporosis or another bone disorder
  • Have conditions that affect nutrient absorption
  • Have chronic kidney or liver disease
  • Are at increased risk of vitamin D deficiency

Routine testing isn’t necessary for everyone.

Food Sources of Vitamin D

You can get vitamin D from:

  • Fatty fish (such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines)
  • Fortified milk and plant-based beverages
  • Fortified breakfast cereals
  • Egg yolks
