The Real Causes of Constant Phlegm and Mucus in Throat and How to Get Rid of It

What Causes Constant Phlegm or Mucus in the Throat?

Having some mucus is normal—it helps protect the nose, throat and airways. But persistent mucus, frequent throat-clearing or a feeling that something is stuck in your throat can have several causes.

The most common causes

1. Postnasal drip
Mucus from the nose or sinuses drains down the back of the throat. Allergies, sinus problems, colds and environmental irritation can trigger it.

2. Acid reflux (“silent reflux”)
Reflux doesn’t always cause classic heartburn. It can cause excess mucus, throat clearing, hoarseness, coughing or a lump-like sensation, particularly after meals or when lying down.

3. Allergies
Hay fever and other allergies can increase nasal mucus and cause persistent drainage into the throat.

4. Asthma or another airway condition
Asthma and chronic lung diseases such as COPD can produce coughing and phlegm. Smoking is another important contributor.

5. A recent respiratory infection
A cold, flu or other infection can leave coughing and mucus behind for weeks even after you otherwise feel better.

What you can try

  • 💧 Drink enough water to keep mucus thinner.
  • 🌫️ A humidifier may help if the air is dry.
  • 🧂 If nasal congestion/postnasal drip is the problem, saline nasal rinses or sprays may help.
  • 🚭 Avoid cigarette smoke and other airway irritants.
  • If reflux seems likely, avoid eating for several hours before bedtime and consider reducing foods or drinks that clearly trigger your symptoms.

Don’t assume that green or yellow mucus automatically means you need antibiotics; mucus color alone doesn’t establish a bacterial infection.

🚨 When you should get checked

See a healthcare professional if the problem persists for several weeks, keeps returning, or is accompanied by unexplained weight loss, fever, persistent hoarseness or significant breathing problems.

Seek urgent medical attention for difficulty breathing, chest pain, or coughing up bloo
