🚨 Don’t Ignore a Red, Swollen Knee: Know the Warning Signs
A knee that suddenly becomes red, swollen, warm, and painful can have several causes. One serious possibility is septic arthritis, a joint infection that can develop rapidly and requires prompt medical treatment.
Other conditions that can cause similar symptoms include gout, bursitis, cellulitis, and inflammatory arthritis.
⚠️ When should you seek medical attention?
Get urgent medical evaluation if a swollen, red knee is accompanied by:
Fever or chills
Severe or rapidly worsening pain
Significant warmth or redness
Difficulty walking or putting weight on the leg
Feeling unusually weak or ill
Important: A photograph cannot determine the cause of knee swelling. These symptoms can overlap between several conditions, so proper examination and, sometimes, testing of the joint fluid are needed.
Don’t try to diagnose or treat a potentially infected joint at home. If septic arthritis is suspected, prompt treatment is important to prevent permanent joint damage.
