Why Daily Showers After 65 May Do More Harm Than Good

Why Daily Showers After 65 May Do More Harm Than Good

The headline is too absolute. Being over 65 does not mean you should stop showering every day. The real issue is that aging skin can become drier and more easily irritated, so long, hot showers and harsh soaps may worsen dryness and itching.

đźšż What can cause problems?

  • Very hot water can worsen dry skin.
  • Long showers can increase exposure to water and cleansing products.
  • Harsh or fragranced soaps may irritate sensitive skin.
  • Aggressive scrubbing can damage the skin barrier.
  • If you’re not sweating or getting dirty, you may not need an especially long or intensive shower.

A better routine

If you prefer to shower daily, you don’t necessarily need to change that. Instead:

  1. Keep showers reasonably short.
  2. Use lukewarm rather than very hot water.
  3. Choose a mild, fragrance-free cleanser if your skin is sensitive.
  4. Avoid vigorous scrubbing.
  5. Pat your skin dry rather than rubbing it.
  6. Apply moisturizer while the skin is still slightly damp. Dermatologists recommend moisturizing after bathing or showering to help retain moisture. (American Academy of Dermatology)

⚠️ Don’t overlook shower safety

For older adults with balance problems, the shower itself can present a fall risk. A nonslip surface, grab bars and appropriate assistance can make bathing safer. The National Institute on Aging also recommends considering a wash-up at the sink when a shower is difficult or unsafe. (order.nia.nih.gov)

Bottom line: There is no rule that people over 65 shouldn’t shower daily. The goal is to maintain hygiene without unnecessarily drying or irritating the skin—and to make bathing physically safe.
