Everyone’s made this mistake. What’s the normal blood pressure for each age group?

What’s the normal blood pressure at different ages?

The common claim that “normal blood pressure increases with age” is misleading. For adults, the current U.S. guideline uses the same blood-pressure categories regardless of age.

Age Normal BP
18–39 Below 120/80 mmHg
40–59 Below 120/80 mmHg
60–79 Below 120/80 mmHg
80+ Below 120/80 mmHg, although treatment targets may need individualization

The categories are:

Normal: <120/<80
Elevated: 120–129 and <80
Stage 1 hypertension: 130–139 or 80–89
Stage 2 hypertension: ≥140 or ≥90

What changes with older age?

Older adults don’t automatically have a “normal” BP of 140/90 or 150/90. The 2025 guideline generally recommends a treatment goal of <130/80 mmHg, but doctors may individualize the goal for people who are very frail, have limited life expectancy, experience side effects, or have other circumstances that make aggressive lowering inappropriate.

Also, one reading isn’t enough to determine whether someone has hypertension. Treatment decisions should be based on an average of multiple properly measured readings.

If you give me your age and blood-pressure reading (for example, 72 years old — 148/86), I can tell you what that specific number means.
